OpenAI Signs Contract with US DoD After Anthropic Blacklisted for Non-Compliance
OpenAI has signed a contract with the US Department of Defense (DoD) to deploy its AI models, following Anthropic's blacklisting over its refusal to relax restrictions on AI use for military applications. Anthropic's $200 million contract was terminated after it resisted the Pentagon's demand for unrestricted access to its AI for lawful military purposes, leading to President Trump's order for federal agencies to cease using Anthropic's technology. OpenAI's agreement includes similar safety principles, allowing it to take Anthropic's place as a key AI partner for the DoD.

OpenAI has secured a contract with the US Department of Defense to deploy its AI models, stepping in after Anthropic was blacklisted for not complying with military usage demands. Anthropic, which held a $200 million contract with the DoD, faced termination after it refused to remove restrictions that prohibited its AI from being used for autonomous weapons and mass surveillance.
Following President Trump's directive for federal agencies to cease using Anthropic's technology, OpenAI was able to negotiate a similar agreement that maintains safety principles. This shift positions OpenAI as the new AI provider for classified military operations.
