OPRF High School Achieves Sustainability Milestone with Geothermal System
District 200's new geothermal system eliminates heating emissions and saves $385,000 annually. This initiative supports a broader goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 45% by 2030.

OPRF High School's new geothermal system consists of 270 wells, providing 100% clean energy for the renovated physical education facility. The system is projected to reduce annual carbon emissions by 442,500 pounds compared to traditional natural gas systems.
Additionally, it is expected to save the district approximately $385,000 in utility costs each year, assisting in offsetting the $12.5 million installation cost, partially funded by a $3.5 million state grant. The district aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions to 45% of 2012 levels by 2030 and achieve a 100% reduction by 2050. This project sets a precedent for sustainable investments within educational institutions, potentially influencing similar initiatives in other districts.
