OroraTech Expands from Wildfire Detection to Dual-Use Satellite Services
In a recent Space Café episode, OroraTech co-founder Thomas Grübler discussed the company's evolution from wildfire detection to dual-use satellite applications. The company operates satellites equipped with dual thermal infrared cameras that can image the entire globe twice daily. Utilizing AI models on board, OroraTech has expanded its services to include maritime traffic monitoring and potential missile detection. The company's growth is supported by Germany's significant defense investments, alongside plans to expand into the US market.

OroraTech is shifting from solely detecting wildfires to offering dual-use satellite capabilities. Its satellites, equipped with dual thermal infrared cameras, can capture 78 million square kilometers daily, enabling global imaging twice a day with only eight satellites.
The company employs AI models directly on its satellites, allowing for frequent software updates and advanced detection capabilities. With the ability to detect maritime traffic and potential missile launches, their technology is finding new applications.
Germany's €35 billion defense investment is reshaping opportunities for startups like OroraTech, which is also expanding into the US market. Future plans include launching a Greek constellation and enhancing global ship tracking services.
