Šoštanj Demands Benefits for Residents from Slovenia's First Floating Solar Plant

SOLAR ENERGY

The Municipality of Šoštanj will support Slovenia's first floating solar power plant only if it provides measurable benefits for local residents. Mayor Boris Goličnik outlined conditions including annual compensation, citizen participation in a solar energy community, and the demolition of a cooling tower at a nearby coal-fired power plant.

The floating solar project, developed by state-owned Holding Slovenske elektrarne (HSE), is expected to undergo a preliminary environmental impact assessment by Q1 2027, with construction slated for Q4 2027. The floating solar plant at Družmirje lake aims for a capacity of 120 MW and is valued at approximately EUR 110 million.

The government plans to adopt a spatial plan decree for the project in March, enabling further design and environmental assessments. The plant's lifespan is estimated at 30 years, with decommissioning costs factored into the investment estimate.
