Otokar Acquires Romania's Automecanica for €85 Million
Otokar's acquisition of Automecanica, valued at €85 million, marks a strategic move to enhance defense manufacturing in Romania. This investment aligns with the growing European demand for localized defense production, emphasizing self-sufficiency and compliance with NATO standards.

Otokar has signed an agreement to acquire 96.77% of Automecanica for approximately €85 million, which includes a €10 million initial payment and a €25 million holdback for liability protection. The deal is subject to approvals from Romania's competition authority and foreign investment screening, which could extend timelines.
The Mediaș facility, equipped for full armored vehicle production, will support Otokar's commitment to the COBRA II program, including a contract for 1,059 tactical vehicles valued at €857 million. This acquisition positions Otokar within the EU defense sector and reflects a growing trend towards localized manufacturing in response to changing European defense needs. The emphasis on local production may impact future defense procurement strategies across NATO, as firms adapt to regulatory environments and seek to enhance regional industrial capabilities.
