Pentagon Procurement Overhaul Directs Funds to Defense-Tech Startups

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth's initiative to reform Pentagon procurement has redirected significant funding to defense-tech startups, with spending on the top 15 startups tripling in the last fiscal year. Despite these increases, these firms still represent less than 1% of total defense contracting dollars.

Approximately 10,000 new defense companies have emerged in the past two years, spurred by changes in acquisition rules that prioritize speed and innovation. Pentagon venture funding reached $16.8 billion in the first half of the year, surpassing previous records.

However, concerns about a potential bubble in defense investments have emerged, and Congress is evaluating Hegseth's proposed $1.5 trillion defense budget. The debate's outcome will influence the momentum of these procurement reforms.
