Philippine Army Integrates ATMOS 155mm Howitzer for Enhanced Long-Range Firepower
The Philippine Army's acquisition of the ATMOS 155mm Howitzer system marks a significant modernization of its artillery capabilities. This advancement improves mobility, survivability, and interoperability with U.S. forces amid evolving regional security challenges.

The Philippine Army's operational capability has been bolstered by the integration of the ATMOS (Autonomous Truck-Mounted Howitzer System), developed by Elbit Systems. Acquired as part of the Horizon 2 phase of the Armed Forces of the Philippines Modernization Program, the ATMOS system features a 155mm gun with a range exceeding 40 km and capabilities for rapid repositioning post-firing.
Initial deliveries began in 2022, with the system being employed in live-fire exercises by 2026. The recent Salaknib 26 exercise showcased Philippine crews' coordination with U.S. observers, underlining the system's compatibility with allied digital targeting networks.
The introduction of ATMOS addresses mobility and survivability gaps in the Philippine artillery, allowing for improved response to both conventional and asymmetric threats in a strategically complex environment. This development is crucial as regional tensions influence the country's defense posture.
