Philippine Navy Rescues 30 Passengers from Stranded Ship; 844 Filipinos Deported from Sabah
A Philippine Navy gunboat, BRP Juan Magluyan (PC392), rescued 30 passengers from the distressed M/L Nurdia off Turtle Islands in Tawi-Tawi, after responding to a distress signal. The M/L Nurdia had engine failure due to a broken rudder.
The Navy crew transported the passengers, including a pregnant woman, two senior citizens, and five children, to Turtle Islands for assistance. Separately, 844 undocumented Filipinos were deported from Sabah, Malaysia, and received by the Department of Social Welfare and Development upon arrival at Zamboanga City.
The group consisted of 518 males, 210 females, and 116 minors. Additionally, over a ton of contraband items was seized during a search at Butuan City Jail, which is currently overcrowded with 435 inmates, exceeding capacity by 114%.
