Philippines Aims for 35% Renewable Energy Share by 2030 Amid Declining Historical Dependence
GEOTHERMALHYDRO POWERWIND ENERGY
The Department of Energy of the Philippines is targeting a renewable energy share of 35% by 2030 and 50% by 2050, amid a decline from 52% in the 1980s to 25% in 2025. Energy Transition Adviser Albert Dalusong highlighted that reliance on renewable sources, particularly hydroelectric and geothermal, has diminished over decades.
Factors contributing to this decline include shifts in policy following the 1986 political transition and the attractiveness of coal due to lower costs. Current efforts focus on offshore wind development, contingent on enhanced infrastructure and agency collaboration.
