DEFENSE

The Philippines will take delivery of the BRP Rajah Sulayman (PS-20), the first of six offshore patrol vessels from HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. The vessel departed Ulsan on January 13, 2023, as part of a ₱30 billion ($573 million) contract signed in 2022.

Each 2,400-ton Sulayman-class ship measures 94 meters in length, has a cruising speed of 15 knots, and an operational range of 5,500 nautical miles. The Philippine Navy will also acquire modular towed-array sonar systems for three OPVs.

Additional vessels in this class include BRP Rajah Lakandula (PS-21) and others. In December 2025, a ₱34 billion ($585 million) contract was signed for two frigates, expanding defense collaborations with HD Hyundai HHI. The Philippines plans to invest ₱2 trillion (approx. $35 billion) over the next decade to enhance military capabilities.
