Pinellas County Enhances Shoreline Resilience with Oyster Reef Initiative
Pinellas County employees are reinforcing shorelines at Philippe Park in Safety Harbor by installing oyster reefs. The initiative, part of an in-service day, involves stacking recycled oyster shells to create a natural barrier against waves and storms. The project has shown promising results, with increased seagrass growth and effective wave energy reduction during recent storms.

Pinellas County employees are strengthening shorelines at Philippe Park in Safety Harbor by stacking mesh bags of recycled oyster shells. This living shorelines initiative is part of the county's in-service day.
They laid 65 feet of oyster shells near mangroves to protect the area. The initiative has yielded positive results, with an oyster reef previously installed offshore showing growth and helping to reduce wave energy during storms in 2024.
Increased seagrass growth has also been observed, indicating improved water health. The project aims to enhance coastal resilience against sea level rise and flooding.
