Plan to Build Power Plants Announced to Lower Electricity Bills in Eastern U.S.

NATURAL GAS

President Trump and bipartisan governors have announced a plan to construct power plants aimed at reducing electricity costs in 13 Eastern states and Washington, D.C. Despite the plan's long timeline, experts suggest immediate actions by governors and regulators could significantly impact energy prices.

In November, the national average retail electricity rate rose 5% year-over-year, with households spending an average of $178 monthly for 1,000 kilowatt-hours. As wholesale electricity and natural gas prices increase due to winter weather, 17% of Americans are behind on their electric bills.

Experts propose lowering utility profit rates, which currently allow returns of 10-12% on investments, to provide relief for consumers. Additionally, California's Cap-and-Invest Program has delivered $14.6 billion in rebates since 2014. Australia plans to offer three hours of free power daily starting in July 2025, while U.S. states are exploring plug-in solar options for residential use.
