Poland Boosts Innovation Amid Defense Spending Surge
Poland is focusing on innovation driven by increased defense expenditure, particularly in AI and robotics, to sustain economic growth. The country aims to establish itself as a European hub for future technologies and improve its low research funding rates.

Poland's defense spending rose to 4.5% of GDP in 2023 from 2.2% in 2022, supporting a shift towards innovation in AI and robotics. The anticipated average GDP growth of 3% from 2024 to 2028 positions Poland as a key growth driver in Central Europe, despite a budget deficit of nearly 7% last year.
The government aims to enhance its research capabilities, with a focus on dual-use technologies applicable in civilian sectors. The establishment of two AI factories by 2027 is expected to bolster local start-ups and industry access to advanced computing resources.
However, Poland still lags behind the EU average in research spending at 1.41%, compared to the EU average of 2.24%. The integration of defense needs with applied research will be crucial for Poland's technological advancement.
