Polk County Initiates Debris Removal Project at Lake Adger Post-Hurricane Helene
Polk County is launching a debris and sediment removal project at Lake Adger to restore water flow and storage capacity impacted by Hurricane Helene. After 18 months of coordination with FEMA and North Carolina Emergency Management, CERES Environmental has been contracted for the project.
It aims to return the 438-acre lake to pre-storm conditions while safeguarding downstream communities and water infrastructure. Surveys in January 2025 indicated an average sediment increase of two feet, with some areas reaching four feet.
Over 520,000 cubic yards of sediment and debris need removal, with work expected to start in late January and last nine to 12 months. Operations will mainly occur from the water using barges and pontoon equipment. Environmental safeguards will be implemented, complying with FEMA and Army Corps of Engineers standards, and a site safety officer will oversee daily operations.
