Workers at the Port of Mombasa have called on President William Ruto to extend the term of Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) managing director Captain William Ruto, whose tenure expires in two months. Captain Ruto, appointed on March 10, 2023, has improved performance and working conditions at the ports.

KPA statistics indicate a rise in cargo throughput to 45 million tonnes in 2025, with 2.142 million TEUs handled, compared to 41.1 million tonnes and two million TEUs in 2024. Under Captain Ruto's leadership, the port saw significant improvements, including new shipping lines and the first LNG-fuelled vessel at an East African port. Ongoing expansion projects are supported by a Sh41 billion allocation from the government.
