Portugal's Biogas Market Delays Impact Energy Sovereignty
Portugal is facing energy sovereignty challenges due to delays in the biogas market, with 50 production projects awaiting regulation. The EU's biogas sector currently meets 6% of natural gas demand, highlighting the urgency for Portugal to accelerate its bioenergy initiatives amid rising natural gas prices.

Portugal has 50 biogas production projects pending regulatory approval, which could generate up to €1.5 billion in investments by 2030. Currently, only one production unit operates in Aljustrel, emphasizing the gap between potential and actual production.
The EU's biogas sector, which constitutes 6% of natural gas supply, illustrates the need for Portugal to enhance its bioenergy capabilities to ensure energy independence. The government’s 2024-2040 Biogas Action Plan aims for biogas to replace 9% of natural gas by 2030, increasing to 18.6% by 2040, but regulatory delays hinder progress. With rising energy prices and geopolitical tensions, the urgency for bioenergy development is critical to mitigate reliance on imported fossil fuels.
