Freeman Short, a staff sergeant with the Maine Army National Guard, died when the fishing vessel Lily Jean sank off Gloucester, Massachusetts, on January 30, resulting in seven fatalities. Short joined the Maine Army National Guard in December 2012, served in Djibouti and Somalia in 2021, and participated in mountaineering training with U.S. allies in Montenegro.

He was promoted to sergeant in 2022 and posthumously to staff sergeant. His awards include the Army Commendation Medal and Army Achievement Medal.
