Project Omega Receives ARPA-E Grant for Used Nuclear Fuel Recycling Initiative
Project Omega has secured an ARPA-E contract to advance the recycling of used nuclear fuel, targeting waste reduction and resource recovery. This initiative aims to establish a scalable process for repurposing significant energy resources contained in the U.S.'s existing nuclear waste.

Project Omega has been awarded a contract by the U.S. Department of Energy's ARPA-E to enhance recycling capabilities for used nuclear fuel (UNF). This effort, under the CURIE program, seeks to demonstrate a molten-salt electrochemical recycling platform that can recover isotopes while minimizing waste.
The project will involve kilogram-scale testing at Idaho National Laboratory to validate system performance and generate essential engineering data for future pilot-scale deployment. The initiative addresses the absence of industrial UNF recycling in the U.S., where approximately 100,000 metric tons of UNF remain unprocessed. If successful, this project could significantly impact energy security and waste management, providing a foundation for advanced reactors and strengthening domestic fuel supply chains.
