Propel NY Energy Project Seeks Permits for $3.26 Billion Power-Line Construction
The $3.26 billion Propel NY Energy power-line project, developed by the New York Power Authority and New York Transco, is awaiting crucial federal permits before a planned construction start this summer. The developers expect to secure necessary approvals to maintain a target in-service date of 2030.
The project involves 89.7 miles of high-voltage underground transmission lines from Long Island to New Rochelle, including three new substations and various cable segments. An 18-mile section under Long Island Sound requires a permit from the U.S.
Army Corps of Engineers, which has been under review since last summer. Local opposition centers on potential disruptions and environmental concerns, with residents calling for rerouting. The project aims to enhance grid reliability and support the state's energy needs despite challenges posed by changes in offshore wind farm plans. A decision on the Army Corps permit is anticipated by mid-2026.
