Proposals and Moratoriums on Data Centers in West Virginia and Maine
Wheeling, W.Va. has not received formal plans for a redevelopment project aimed at creating a data center on a 15-acre site. Meanwhile, in Maine, local councils are considering data center developments amidst concerns over environmental impacts and energy consumption.

Wheeling Mayor Denny Magruder announced that no formal redevelopment plans have been submitted for the former Centre Foundry property, proposed by Stokes Inc. for transformation into a data center and energy technology campus, spanning 60,000 square feet on 15 acres. If successful, revenue from the project would allocate 50% to West Virginia's income tax reduction.
In Maine, local councils, particularly in Oakland, are favoring the establishment of data centers despite environmental concerns, with councilors highlighting the state's suitability for such developments. Governor Janet Mills vetoed a statewide moratorium on data centers in April, prompting towns to consider their own regulations.
The Maine Data Center Advisory Council was also established to evaluate the balance of benefits and risks associated with data centers. Potential projects face scrutiny, with concerns about resource use and pollution impacting community sentiment.
