Caldwell County is considering a proposed 2 million-square-foot data center campus on 320 acres off State Highway 142 in Martindale, approximately 35 miles south of Austin. The project includes two 1 million-square-foot buildings and aims to support the growing demand for data centers in Central Texas.
The development, presented by civil engineer Jordan Schaefer of Kimley-Horn and Associates, will not use water for cooling, relying instead on clean-fuel natural gas technology from TurboCell for power until a permanent solution is available in about seven years. Developers are linked to Edged Energy, a subsidiary of Endeavor.
As of September, 462 megawatts of data center capacity were under construction in Central Texas, a significant increase from 9.5 megawatts in early 2020. Environmental concerns related to power and water usage have been noted, particularly in regions experiencing rapid growth like Central Texas.
