Protests Erupt Over AI Supercomputer Construction Near Grenoble
Opposition is mounting against a proposed AI supercomputer in Eybens, France, citing environmental concerns. The project, costing over €800 million, faces skepticism regarding its energy consumption and local economic benefits.

Approximately 80 protesters rallied on March 29 against an AI supercomputer project in Eybens, Isère, citing high energy consumption and environmental impacts. The facility, estimated at over €800 million and covering 24,000 m², is under construction on the former Hewlett-Packard site.
Critics have expressed doubts about the promised 100 local jobs, estimating a potential annual loss of €188,000 in municipal revenue compared to the previous HP site. The project's maximum power capacity has been reduced from 1 gigawatt to 200 megawatts, raising questions about its feasibility. The construction aligns with a national strategy to establish 35 data centers across France, where it ranks fifth globally in data center prevalence.
