The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is conducting a virtual public hearing regarding Iroquois Gas' proposed expansion of a natural gas compressor station located 1,900 feet from Whisconier Middle School. The expansion aims to more than double the station's capacity to receive an additional 125 million cubic feet of natural gas per day.
The proposal, which includes two steel pipelines, has faced opposition from residents, town leaders, and environmental groups due to potential health impacts. The expansion is part of a larger $272 million project to increase natural gas supply for heating and power.
The New York Department of Environmental Conservation has previously approved air permits for related projects, but raised concerns about greenhouse gas emissions under the Climate Act. Public comments will be reviewed by DEEP before a recommendation is issued.
