Punjab Industrialist Develops Low-Cost Catalyst for Hydrogen Fuel Cells
Dr. HS Cheema from Ropar has patented a new catalyst technology using doped graphite, reducing fuel cell costs by up to 60%. This innovation aims to enhance hydrogen fuel cell adoption in India, particularly for electric vehicles, as it replaces expensive palladium.

Dr. HS Cheema, Chairman of Cheema Boilers Limited in Punjab, has developed a catalyst technology using specially doped graphite, which could reduce the cost of hydrogen fuel cells by up to 60%. This innovation replaces costly palladium, addressing a significant barrier to fuel cell adoption.
Fuel cells generate electricity through hydrogen reacting with oxygen, offering a clean energy source. A prototype has been tested at IIT Ropar and a CSIR lab in Chandigarh, with real field testing planned. This development aligns with India's National Green Hydrogen Mission to promote cleaner energy.
