Quinnipiac University Installs Fuel Cells for Clean Energy Initiative

FUEL CELL

Quinnipiac University is installing 10 high-efficiency fuel cells across its campuses as part of a clean energy initiative. Six units will be at the Mount Carmel Campus, with two each at York Hill and North Haven campuses.

Each fuel cell generates 460 kilowatts of electricity through a chemical reaction with natural gas, minimizing emissions to water and carbon dioxide. The university expects to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by over 10 million pounds annually and nearly eliminate nitrogen oxide emissions.

A 10-year power purchase agreement with VFS Energy Services will cover installation and maintenance costs, with Quinnipiac purchasing electricity at a fixed rate. Additionally, the university has adopted LEED-certified building standards for new facilities and will utilize waste heat recovery to improve energy efficiency.
