RDC Increases Copper Exports to the U.S. Amid New Human Rights Oversight
The Democratic Republic of Congo aims to boost copper exports to 500,000 tons annually through a joint venture with Mercuria Energy. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance accountability in mining operations and environmental oversight following a deal with the U.S.

The Democratic Republic of Congo (RDC) has announced plans to increase copper exports to the United States, targeting an annual volume of 500,000 tons through a joint venture with Mercuria Energy Group, backed by the International Development Finance Corporation (DFC). This initiative will leverage state shares in key mining companies such as Kamoto Copper Company (KCC) and Tenke Fungurume Mining (TFM).
Additionally, a new observatory for mining royalties is being established to ensure accountability and compliance with social and environmental obligations, transforming violations into financial risks for multinational corporations. This shift towards enhanced monitoring could significantly impact how companies engage with local communities and adhere to regulatory standards.
