Record Solar Generation in Great Britain Reaches 6.3% of Power Supply in 2025

In 2025, solar energy accounted for a record 6.3% of Great Britain's power, with generation rising 30% to 18,314 GWh, up from 14,067 GWh in 2024. This growth was fueled by a record 1,622 hours of sunshine in the UK, the highest since 1910, particularly in southern and eastern England, where solar PV development is concentrated.

Solar generation capacity surged by 18% to approximately 23.8 GW, with 650 MW from small-scale installations, 450 MW from commercial rooftops, and 2.5 GW from ground-mounted solar plants. Almost 250,000 residential rooftop solar installations were recorded, and Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners' Cleve Hill, the largest solar plant in the UK, came online this year. Solar Energy UK predicts capacity will reach nearly 60 GW in the next decade, ensuring continued record growth.
