Redesigning irrigation canals in Egypt's Nile Delta could lower costs by 40%, according to a recent study. Researchers from Egypt's National Water Research Center propose using smaller pumps and tailoring pipeline sizes to actual flow rates, which could bring the cost of an improved system down from EGP 34,270 to EGP 20,560 per feddan.
This approach, when applied across 5,000 feddans, may save approximately EGP 68.5 million. The proposed model emphasizes farmer participation and revised construction methods, although it is still theoretical and requires pilot testing for validation. Potential challenges include increased maintenance needs and inflation impacts on material costs.
