Renault Plans to Reintegrate Ampere EV Unit Amidst EV Demand Challenges
Renault SA will reintegrate its Ampere electric vehicle and software operations following CEO Francois Provost's decision to reverse a previous strategy due to lower-than-expected EV demand. The move comes after labor union discussions aimed at simplifying the company's structure and accelerating decision-making processes.
In 2024, Renault abandoned plans to list Ampere on the stock market amidst cooling demand for battery-powered vehicles. Other European manufacturers, including Stellantis NV, Volkswagen AG, and Porsche AG, are also revising their EV strategies.
Ampere will become an engineering center for Renault, focusing on software and EVs, with its northern France plants being folded back into the parent company. The reorganization is expected to be completed by July 1, with Provost presenting the new strategy this year. Renault is also expanding beyond Europe, with a research hub in Shanghai and plans to assist in drone production for the French army.
