Renewable Energy Innovators Cameroon Expands Electrification Efforts in Rural Areas
Renewable Energy Innovators Cameroon, supported by IEEE Smart Village, aims to electrify 760 villages by 2031. With a recent government license, the organization can scale operations, targeting additional villages to enhance economic growth and education access.

Renewable Energy Innovators Cameroon (REI) has received official authorization from the Cameroonian government to produce and distribute electricity in off-grid areas via solar minigrids. This milestone enables the organization to scale up its efforts to electrify 760 villages by 2031, having already identified 134 new villages for expansion.
Founded in 2006 by Jude Numfor, REI transitioned from a non-profit to a commercial entity, focusing on solar minigrids that utilize photovoltaic technology and battery storage. The partnership with IEEE Smart Village, established in 2017, has provided essential funding and support for expanding REI's operations and developing an open-source metering system to promote transparency.
The organization faces challenges in attracting venture capital and skilled labor but aims to drive social and economic growth through electrification. The impact of REI's initiatives is evident in the flourishing of small businesses across electrified communities.
