Rerec to Hybridize 20 Diesel Power Plants with Solar Energy
Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (Rerec) plans to integrate solar into 20 diesel plants, aiming to reduce Sh1.16 billion annual fuel costs. This shift is expected to lower electricity prices for consumers and increase renewable energy capacity significantly.

Rerec will integrate solar energy into 20 diesel power plants to decrease its annual fuel expenses, estimated at Sh1.16 billion. The integration, approved by the Treasury, will transition the plants to primarily operate on solar, using diesel only as backup.
Currently, thermal power costs Sh26.9 per kWh, while solar is priced at Sh11.13 per kWh. This project aims to alleviate rising operational costs and support the growing demand for electricity. By 2027, Rerec anticipates increasing its renewable energy output from 60.498 MWp to 78.870 MWp. The shift may enhance financial stability for Rerec and improve electricity affordability for consumers.
