Rheinmetall's KS Gleitlager Launches District Heating System in St. Leon-Rot to Cut CO2 Emissions

NATURAL GAS

KS Gleitlager GmbH inaugurated a district heating and local heating system at its St. Leon-Rot site on November 28, 2024, aiming to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 800 tons annually. The project involves a collaboration with the neighboring SLR Giesserei, utilizing a closed underground circulation system for waste heat recovery.

Water flows from the foundry to KS Gleitlager, where it releases heat for production and heating, before returning to the foundry for reheating. This initiative supports Rheinmetall's sustainability goal of achieving CO2 neutrality by 2035, while also reducing natural gas consumption for heating.

The project was directed by CEIH GmbH, and approximately 560 employees work at the KS Gleitlager facility, known for its precision plain bearings. The SLR Group produces over 130,000 tonnes of machine parts annually.
