Rio Tinto and Calix to Develop Zesty Green Iron Demonstration Plant in Australia
Rio Tinto and Calix are collaborating on the Zesty green iron demonstration plant in Australia, aimed at producing up to 30,000 t/y of hydrogen direct reduced iron or hot-briquetted iron. The facility will use various iron-ore feedstocks and is designed to lower emissions in steelmaking. Rio Tinto plans to invest over A$35 million, supplemented by a grant of up to A$44.9 million from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency. The project is currently in the detailed design phase with a final investment decision anticipated in 2026.

Rio Tinto and Calix are developing the Zesty green iron demonstration plant in Australia to produce up to 30,000 t/y of hydrogen direct reduced iron or hot-briquetted iron using Pilbara iron-ore. The plant will operate as an open-access toll-processing facility, focusing on lower-emissions steelmaking through electric heating and hydrogen reduction.
