River Dredging Project Endangers Khulna Shelter Homes
Residents of the Ashrayan shelter in Khulna face significant risks due to improper soil dumping from a river dredging project. Efforts to address the situation are ongoing, but slow progress and inadequate oversight raise concerns for the affected families.

The Bangladesh Army's 24 Engineer Construction Brigade is executing a Tk 140-crore river dredging initiative to enhance water flow and alleviate waterlogging in the Bhabadah region. However, residents of the Ashrayan shelter project in Dumuria upazila report that excavated soil is being dumped perilously close to their homes, causing structural damage and threatening their living conditions.
Of the 29 houses along the riverbank, at least eight have sustained serious damage, with one house already demolished to facilitate machinery movement. Although local officials acknowledge the issue and are taking corrective measures, progress in removing the soil has been slow, heightening fears of collapse during heavy rains. This situation underscores the need for better planning and oversight in public works projects to protect vulnerable populations.
