Romania Allocates 1.6 Billion Lei for Defense Modernization with Iron Dome Standards
The Romanian government has allocated 1.6 billion lei to enhance the Ministry of National Defense's budget, focusing on military procurement and modernization of air defense systems to 'C-RAM' standards, akin to the Iron Dome. This includes 1.3 billion lei for military contracts and 300 million lei for infrastructure upgrades at Mihail Kogălniceanu base, alongside plans to acquire Patriot PAC-2 missiles and components of the Iron Dome. Currently, military acquisitions account for nearly 30% of Romania's national defense budget.

The Romanian government has allocated 1.6 billion lei from the budget reserve fund to supplement the Ministry of National Defense (MApN) budget. These funds will be used for military procurement contracts, including the modernization of air defense systems to 'C-RAM' standards, designed to counter artillery and missile threats, similar to the Iron Dome.
The approval includes two government resolutions: one allocating 1.3 billion lei and another allocating 300 million lei for the infrastructure of Mihail Kogălniceanu base and the procurement of Patriot PAC-2 missiles through the NATO Support and Procurement Agency. In July, the Defense Minister announced plans to acquire components of the Iron Dome, developed by Israel.
MApN later confirmed a framework agreement with Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd. for SHORAD-VSHORAD air defense systems, valued at over 2 billion euros. Military acquisitions currently represent nearly 30% of Romania's national defense budget.
