Romania to Vote on NuScale Small Modular Reactors Project in February 2026

FUSION & ADVANCED NUCLEAR POWER

The Romanian Ministry of Energy has proposed a vote for the investment decision on the Small Modular Reactors (SMR) project at Doicești during the General Assembly of Shareholders scheduled for February 12, 2026. The project involves the installation of six NuScale SMRs, totaling 462 MW, nearly 70% of a single reactor's capacity at the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant.

Nuclearelectrica, a state-controlled company, holds a 50% stake in the project alongside Nova Power & Gas. On January 23, 2026, the Ministry requested the addition of this vote to the agenda. The SMR project is expected to create 200 permanent jobs and 1,500 during construction, with support from a $99 million financial commitment by the U.S.

Export-Import Bank. The project aligns with Romania's goal to triple its nuclear energy generation capacity by 2050, aiming for a clean energy source with a lifespan exceeding 60 years.
