Romanian Tomato Grower Hortihaus to Install Cogeneration Units, Halving Costs
Hortihaus, a major tomato grower in Romania, is set to install two natural gas cogeneration units with a combined capacity of 9.9 MW. This investment, totaling EUR 4.4 million, aims to cut operational costs by 40% to 50% by generating own electricity, heat, and CO2 for greenhouse use.
The National Energy Regulatory Authority has issued the establishment authorization for the first cogeneration unit, which will also capture CO2 for enhancing photosynthesis. The greenhouses in Timiș county produce 1,500 tons of cherry tomatoes annually and are expanding by three hectares.
The project includes two units of 3.2 MW and 6.6 MW, expected to be operational in the second half of the year. The initiative will significantly reduce electricity and heating costs while improving energy self-sufficiency during the growing season.
