Romania's Defence Ministry Ensures Permanent Monitoring of Neptun Deep Offshore Gas Project
Romania's Ministry of Defence has announced permanent monitoring of the Neptun Deep offshore gas project, highlighting its strategic significance and risks. Developed by OMV Petrom and Romgaz, the EUR 4 billion project is set to begin production in fall 2027, with an expected annual output of 8 billion cubic meters, which would enhance Romania's gas supply independence and establish it as a regional exporter. The project's reserves are estimated at 100 billion cubic meters, sufficient to meet Romania's consumption for a decade.

Romania's Ministry of Defence has confirmed that the Neptun Deep offshore natural gas project is under permanent monitoring due to its strategic importance and associated risks. The project, developed by OMV Petrom and Romgaz, represents a EUR 4 billion investment and is expected to commence production in fall 2027, with an estimated annual output of 8 billion cubic meters.
This output would enable Romania to achieve gas supply independence and become a regional exporter. Neptun Deep has a total reserve of at least 100 billion cubic meters, equivalent to Romania's consumption over 10 years. The Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) where the project is located is governed by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, allowing the coastal state to exercise rights to resources while maintaining freedom of navigation for other nations.
