Royal Navy Conducts Final 2025 Exercise in South Georgia Under Operation Southern Sovereignty
The Royal Navy, alongside Army and RAF personnel, completed its last exercise of 2025 in South Georgia, South Atlantic. The Portsmouth-based patrol vessel HMS Forth, currently in the Falkland Islands, served as the flagship for Operation Southern Sovereignty.
High summer temperatures in South Georgia reached 10-12C, while surrounding waters were at 6C. The operation involved logistics support for the South Georgia government, transporting supplies from Maiviken Cove to Grytviken, a distance of under two miles.
Personnel trekked over rough terrain, aided by the British Antarctic Survey. The operation included a detachment from the Royal Irish Regiment and air support from RAF Typhoon and an A400M transporter. Commander Grahame Graham-Flint and Brigadier Charlie Harmer emphasized the importance of demonstrating UK sovereignty and operational capability in the South Atlantic.
