Royal Navy Initiates Repair Scheme to Enhance Fleet Readiness and Cut Costs
The Royal Navy has launched a repair scheme aimed at saving millions and enhancing fleet readiness, centered in Portsmouth. The project involves repairing equipment instead of discarding it, with 84,000 repairable items valued at approximately £200 million stored in Portsmouth.
The warehouse is at 97% capacity, expected to fill within a year. In addition to Portsmouth, smaller stores in Plymouth and Faslane contain 21,000 repairable items. The initiative has already demonstrated significant savings; for example, a repair of a reducing station typically costing £4,361 was completed in-house for £638, resulting in a £26,000 saving per ship. The Ministry of Defence's Productivity Portfolio team is funding the project, which aligns with the Strategic Defence Review's goal of achieving £6 billion in savings.
