Royal Navy Monitors Russian Cargo Ship Sinegorsk near UK Undersea Data Cables
The Royal Navy tracked the Russian cargo ship Sinegorsk as it spent 14 hours near undersea data cables in the Bristol Channel, UK. The ship, which departed from Arkhangelsk, Russia, approached within two miles of Minehead, raising security concerns due to its proximity to cables linking the UK to North America and Europe.
The UK Department for Transport issued a warning for Sinegorsk to leave UK waters, which it complied with after undertaking safety repairs. This incident follows previous sightings of the Russian spy ship Yantar in British waters, suspected of mapping underwater infrastructure and engaging in GPS jamming against Royal Navy vessels. Defence Secretary John Healey stated that military options are prepared should Yantar change course, emphasizing the UK's commitment to safeguarding its underwater connections.
