The Royal Navy's recent test of the CAPSTONE drone marks a significant advancement in anti-submarine warfare. The 600kg-class unmanned aircraft flew for over two hours carrying sonobuoys while integrating with General Dynamics' UYS-506 processor.
Data from the sonobuoys was transmitted to ground control via Starlink SATCOM, demonstrating effective long-distance communication. This capability allows for extended surveillance and operational effectiveness, potentially freeing crewed helicopters for other missions. The trial was part of the ATLANTIC BASTION program, indicating increased confidence in unmanned systems within naval operations.
