Royal Netherlands Navy Acquires 12 Shield AI V-BAT VTOL Drones for Naval Operations
DEFENSE
The Royal Netherlands Navy (RNLN) has acquired 12 Shield AI V-BAT vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) unmanned aircraft systems for use aboard its vessels. The procurement was announced on March 17, with operational trials already in progress aboard HNLMS Johan de Witt during Exercise 'Cold Response 2026', running from March 9 to 19 in Norway.
The V-BAT drones, equipped with radar and cameras, provide extended reconnaissance capabilities. Ground-control equipment will be installed on eight RNLN ships, likely including Johan de Witt. The acquisition was expedited through the NATO procurement framework, although a full operational timeline has not been disclosed.
