Ørsted Enhances Generator Failure Prediction with New Sensor Technology
Ørsted has improved its wind turbine generator failure prediction rate to 70% using a debris sensor system. This advancement is significant for reducing operational costs and enhancing maintenance efficiency in offshore wind farms.

Ørsted's debris sensor system enables the prediction of wind turbine generator failures with a 70% success rate, up from nearly 0% prior to installation. Implemented across 560 offshore wind turbines, this system allows for failure detection at least three months in advance, significantly reducing the average outage duration by 72% compared to unpredicted failures.
The development was prompted by the identification of metallic debris as a risk factor for generator failures. The condition monitoring model leverages daily data analysis to track abnormal patterns, streamlining inspection workflows and improving maintenance strategies. This innovation supports better forecasting of generator demand, aiding in bulk procurement and cost reduction.
