Ruacana Hydropower Key to Namibia's Energy Landscape Amid Import Risks
Ruacana Hydroelectric Power Station accounts for over 70% of Namibia's electricity generation. A decline in water flow from Angola poses risks of increased energy imports and costs, highlighting the station's critical role.

In March 2026, Namibia's local electricity generation reached 283,738 MWh, with Ruacana Hydropower Station contributing 243,514 MWh, or 85.8%. This represents a recovery from February's generation of only 43.1%, as imports constituted 56.9% of the supply.
The country's energy cost for 2026 is projected at N$5.3 billion, with demand estimated at 3.8 million MWh. The energy regulator is reviewing an application for an 8.4% tariff increase from Nampower. Continued reliance on Ruacana could mitigate import dependency as regional electricity prices remain high.
