Russia and Canada Reject IMO Ban on Heavy Fuel Oil in Arctic Amid Sustainable Shipping Transition

NATURAL GAS

Russia and Canada have informed the International Maritime Organization (IMO) that they will not participate in the voluntary ban on heavy fuel oil (HFO) in the Arctic. Analysts suggest Canada's stance is likely temporary, while Russia plans to continue using HFO for at least five more years.

Viktor Genkulov, a marine engineer from SIFSERVICE L.T.D., emphasizes that the transition to environmentally friendly fuels is inevitable, necessitating modernization of vessels and infrastructure. Common alternatives include low-emission fuels like liquefied natural gas.

Challenges include retrofitting older ships, installing scrubbers, and ensuring compliance with international standards, which can be costly. However, investments in fuel efficiency and emissions reductions can yield economic benefits over time. Genkulov advocates for the adoption of digital monitoring systems to enhance operational safety and environmental sustainability in the shipping industry.
