Russia Attacks Energy Infrastructure in Kyiv and Dnipro, Intensifies Military Operations in Eastern Ukraine
Russia has intensified its military operations in eastern Ukraine, launching significant attacks on energy infrastructure in Dnipropetrovsk and Kyiv, resulting in extensive power outages and casualties. Over 800,000 consumers in Dnipropetrovsk were left without electricity, while strikes in Kyiv caused four deaths and affected around a million residents. Concurrently, Ukraine's military faces challenges from corruption but is receiving new anti-aircraft systems from the UK to bolster its defense efforts.

Russia has escalated its military operations in eastern Ukraine, particularly targeting energy infrastructure. On January 6-7, a significant attack on Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia Oblasts damaged thermal power plants and substations, resulting in extensive power outages.
By January 8, over 800,000 consumers in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast were without electricity, and the Zaporizhstal plant halted production. On January 9, similar strikes targeted Kyiv, causing four fatalities and leaving around a million consumers without power.
Ongoing fighting near Kostiantynivka and Lyman has seen Russian forces make advances, while attacks on port infrastructure in Odesa resulted in casualties among port workers. Furthermore, Ukraine's military is receiving new anti-aircraft systems from the UK and plans for greater cooperation in arms production. Corruption issues within the military and defense sector continue to hamper Ukraine's operational capabilities.
