Russia Defers Debt Repayment for Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant to 2028
Russia has deferred the debt repayment for the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project by 1.5 years, with the first installment now due on September 15, 2028, following amendments to the Intergovernmental Credit Agreement. This extension ensures the financial continuity of the project, which is on track to begin electricity generation for Bangladesh's national grid next year. The bilateral trade between Russia and Bangladesh has surpassed $2 billion annually, highlighting their strong economic ties, particularly in energy cooperation.

Moscow has postponed the main debt repayment for the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) project by 1.5 years, with the first installment now due on September 15, 2028. This revised schedule was agreed upon in July 2025 following amendments to the Intergovernmental Credit Agreement (IGCA), approved by the finance ministries of Russia and Bangladesh.
The extension of the IGCA and renewal of the Letter of Credit ensures continuity of financial operations for the project. Currently, work focuses on commissioning Unit-1 of the plant, which is nearing completion.
The project aims to begin electricity generation for Bangladesh's national grid as early as next year. Bilateral trade has exceeded $2 billion annually, with significant exports from Russia, including machinery and wheat. Energy cooperation, including nuclear power and renewable energy, remains central to the economic relationship between the two countries.
