Russia Delivers Two Modernized Tu-160M Bombers Amid Slow Tu-160M2 Modernization Challenges

DEFENSESPACE ECONOMY

Russia's defense industry has delivered two modernized Tupolev Tu-160M strategic bombers as part of a broader, yet constrained Tu-160M2 modernization plan facing propulsion challenges with the NK-32-02 engine. Despite the delivery, the modernization of the Long-Range Aviation segment of the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) lags behind tactical jet upgrades.

The Novosibirsk Aircraft Production Association produces the Sukhoi Su-34, which has suffered significant combat losses in the Ukraine war. The Komsomolsk-na-Amure plant produces the Su-35, with seven batches delivered in 2025, the last batch scheduled for Christmas.

The Tu-160, which entered service in 1987, is the last strategic bomber produced in Russia. Plans for the Tu-160M2 included modernizing existing aircraft and producing new models, with the first flight occurring in January 2022. The modernization aims to enhance avionics and combat systems, but progress is hindered by engine production issues from the Kuznetsov plant.
