Russia Enhances Plant No. 9 with European Machinery for Artillery Production
Russia's Plant No. 9 in Yekaterinburg has expanded artillery barrel and tank gun production using European machinery, despite sanctions. The upgrade addresses rapid wear of artillery during combat in Ukraine and relies on at least 22 Western-origin machines for precision manufacturing. The modernization effort has been ongoing since 2016, with significant increases in ammunition production expected through 2025.

Russia has expanded its Plant No. 9 in Yekaterinburg, enhancing production of artillery barrels and tank guns using European machinery. This upgrade addresses the rapid wear of artillery in Ukraine's combat and is supported by at least 22 Western-origin machines from various European countries and Taiwan.
Despite sanctions, modernization efforts have continued since 2016. Ammunition production figures show significant increases: 1.428 million 120 mm mortar rounds in 2024 and 1.961 million in 2025, and 1.558 million 152 mm artillery shells in 2024 rising to 1.717 million in 2025.
